THE ESSENCE THAT CONTAINS EVERYTHING ELSE IN IT (as far as anyone knows, anyway). IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE SAID ABOUT IT? JUST LOOK AROUND YOU AND YOU WILL FIND XEM. XEY EXIST IN EVERYTHING YOU SEE, IN EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH, IN EVERYTHING YOU TASTE. XEY ARE THE CELLS THAT FORM YOUR BODY. XEY ARE THE ATOMS THAT HOLD YOU TOGETHER. XEY ARE THE SPACE IN BETWEEN EVERYTHING. XEY SIMPLY ARE, AND ALWAYS WILL BE AS LONG AS YOU OR ANYONE ELSE COULD EVER BE CONCERNED. XEY WERE AROUND WHEN THE FIRST THING BEGAN, AND XEY WILL BE THERE WHEN THE LAST SPECK OF IT ENDS.
ACCORDING TO HUMAN RESEARCH, THE UNIVERSE BEGAN 13.8 BILLION YEARS AGO IN A PERIOD OF RAPID EXPANSION KNOWN AS THE BIG BANG. WHAT CAME BEFORE THAT - WHAT EXISTED BEFORE TIME, BEFORE SPACE, BEFORE THE UNIVERSE ITSELF DID - IS UNKNOWN. AND XEY HAVE NEVER TOLD AND NEVER WILL.
IF XEY EVEN KNOW HOW THEY CAME TO BE (AS MUCH AS THE UNIVERSE COULD EVER TRULY "KNOW" ANYTHING). WOULD YOU KNOW HOW YOU WERE MADE IF THERE WAS NO ONE AROUND TO TELL YOU?
Above all other of my duties, I serve Xem. I am the mouthpiece from which Xey speak, and I exist to interact with the people for Xem. Through me and the other Fates, the Overworld is maintained in homeostasis. I can't say I like, nor dislike serving Xem. It simply is what I was made for. Though sometimes I do get sad that there are things I cannot do because of my role... Things my friends have complete freedom to do. I must simply live vicariously through them.
Sometimes I - I get scared thinking about Xem. The way Xey know everything that you're doing, or that you're thinking, or feeling... Xey must've known where my mother was the whole time she was on the run from the Fates. And yet Xey let her run. Let her hide until I was stupid enough to get her found. They killed her and said it was Xer will. If it really was, why did Xey let her run? Why did Xey not just tell the Fates where she was? And why did Xey let them kill her in the end? I wish they'd just tell me... That's what really scares me. The fact that Xey're silent. Always.
I think the thing that always gets to me about Xem is the fact that there has to be life outside of Earth. Outside the Netherworld. Which means there's probably another Overworld, just like this one. And there's probably another me - well, at least whatever that being thinks of when they conceputalize death - and Xey're there. Just as much as Xey're here. Xey're everywhere, all of the time.
What I always wonder - and what Xey'll never answer - is our origins. All of it, really, but the Divine in particular. Did they create us? Or were we merely a byproduct of other things that formed? Were we happenstance, or intended design?
