relationships

nymph/elf, human (partially)

while the children of nymphs and elves usually identify themselves as belonging to one group or the other (typically based on gender, as elves tend to be not women and nymphs tend to be not men (typically men and women respectively, but significant populations of those who are neither exist)), by the time emily was born her mother identified herself as being both. since emily did not grow up in the underworld and therefore never chose in the first place, she identifies herself as being both as well. from being a mix of nymph and elf she inherited wind powers and some increased flexibility.

her father was human and lived in china - emily has never known anything more about him.

BIOGRAPHY

Born to a member of a a group working against (and to kill) the Fates, Emily's childhood was marked primarily by constant moving - each new place marking a new identity she had to assume. Her mother never said her real name except in whispers, and only ever alone. They moved primarily across China until Emily was around 10, and then they left for Japan. They spent a couple years there, then moved to the United States when Emily was 13 - Lija was far too close to being found (or so she believed).

But after only a few months - tragedy struck. Emily had developed an interest in creating machines - a hobby her mother fully supported her in. She just requested that she be careful. Not only for the sake of not wanting her daughter hurt, but any serious injury (or worse, death) could lead to them being found. Emily was too young to always heed this warning though. When she climbed onto one of her machines one day it fell, crushing her beneath it. She died soon after - her mother only finding her after work, too late to do anything.

The Fates can sense death like a beacon - and they tracked Lija down with it. They sentenced her mother to death, and half-revived Emily to get further information out of her. They had mercy on her though, at least, and initally were going to let some demon family adopt her. Death, however, had been keeping up with the trial and knew that demonic customs meant it was unlikely anyone would want to take her in (at least not anyone who would keep her safe). He offered to let her stay in the castle, but she refused to accept this without some sort of payment. So he created a fake job for her doing technology-based tasks (such as "hacking" into computers by possessing them) to help out his death god friends. Eventually due to word spreading, this turned into an actual job for her and is what she does to this day.

I feel quite bad for her honestly. Losing her mother at only 13? And to the Fates no less... It's why I gave her a 'job' here - she wouldn't accept staying in my castle for nothing, and I can't blame her - I knew that she'd get treated so poorly by many of those here for the actions of her mother.

emily's great. She knows so much shit about the physical hardware of machines and how they interact with software, much more than I do. She's also great at helping me figure out weird bugs in my code by just going into my computer.

I love hanging out with Emily, but I wish our schedules aligned more closely... I have shit to do, so I can't usually hang out with her late at night and she's practically nocturnal, so any day plans don't usually work out.
