born to the last surviving angel and a permanent reminder of her trauma (at least he feels like it sometimes), angel's childhood was not exactly the best. the first five years were - when he lived with his mom in the underworld - but she stopped being able to deal with the constant reminder once he got older and (despite the fact she tried to get jasmine to scrub him out of her kid's appearance as much as possible) was a bit too much like his father. so she sent him to earth - got jasmine to invent a new identity for him and place him with humans, scrub his memory of anything related to her. his new "parents" were okay at first, but turned neglectful later. which is probably why angel tried to seek approval from one of his older brother's friends when he was 13, despite satan's protests (if satan could have, he would have banned the kid from the house). this did not turn out well.

which is a bit of an understatement. the guy tried to assault him at a party, satan (semi-accidentally) set the bedroom on fire, which fucked up angel's glamour (as in, what kept him looking human) and then had to try to fix it. and also comfort angel on why he was somehow fine despite being literally on fire. and also get them out of there.

unfortunately, the removal of the glamour made angel a bit insane. which also made satan a bit insane by proxy. so in a move satan would regret forever and would apologize a billion times for - he convinced angel to cut his face open in the style of one particular fate (who would have hated the comparison). and also kill his "parents", which satan did not regret. they were, by this point, astoundly awful to their children.

they fled due to the aforementioned murder while satan figured out how to contact anyone from the underworld (it had been years, and most of the previous times he'd gotten lost he had a phone or a crow or something) and bounced from shelter to shelter until satan finally figured out the ritual to speak with morningstar and get them home.

shafira was actually rather happy they were back - satan because he'd been missing since angel was born, and angel because she'd realized she made a mistake, but couldn't get him back. they lived peacefully for the most part, once angel got on meds for his continual emotional outbursts that were definitely partially magic caused (he also needed therapy obviously, but good luck ever getting that offered in the castle).

when angel was 21 though - the meds stopped working and he got itchy. and homicidal. especially with morningstar. which is why he eventually decided to move to earth with mysti instead. easier to take out your problems on humans instead. or your boyfriend (they'll just laugh and ask you what's wrong anyway).
